Why Perth petrol prices work differently from every other Australian city
Perth has a unique petrol pricing system that makes it the most transparent fuel market in Australia. Here's how WA FuelWatch works and how to use it to always pay less.
The WA FuelWatch system
Every other Australian state has a volatile, unpredictable petrol pricing environment. Perth is different. Under the WA FuelWatch scheme, every petrol station in Perth must submit the next day's price by 2pm each day. Those prices are then locked in from 6am the following morning and cannot change for 24 hours. This means Perth motorists can know tomorrow's prices today — a level of transparency that doesn't exist anywhere else in the country.
Tuesday is the reset day
Perth prices reset competitively every Tuesday morning. The cycle works like this: stations that have been holding elevated prices face competitive pressure from early-week discounting. By Monday afternoon, FuelWatch submissions show whether major chains are dropping prices for Tuesday. If they are, Tuesday morning represents the cheapest window of the week. Prices then tend to rise through Wednesday and Thursday as the competitive discount erodes, before falling again the following Tuesday.
How to use FuelWatch
The WA FuelWatch website (fuelwatch.wa.gov.au) shows tomorrow's prices at every registered station in the Perth metro area. The interface is basic but the data is comprehensive. Filter by suburb, fuel type, and brand to find the cheapest option on your route. Unlike eastern state apps that show you prices from yesterday, FuelWatch shows you tomorrow's prices today — uniquely actionable information.
What PetrolCast adds for Perth
FuelWatch tells you the best day to fill up and which station is cheapest. What it doesn't tell you is whether this week's Tuesday trough will be higher or lower than last week's. That's where oil market signals and AUD/USD matter: when global oil prices are rising, Perth's Tuesday prices will be elevated across the board, regardless of which station you choose. PetrolCast's macro outlook tells you whether Perth's overall price floor is trending up or down over the coming 4 weeks.
